(In)civility in the Classroom

Social norms around appropriate and expected classroom behavior are changing. Student use of technology is evolving. Many faculty report being puzzled and challenged by actions and interactions with some students, and are not sure how best to accommodate these new “norms” in their teaching. In this session, the Transforming Theater Ensemble will enact several examples of classroom incivilities and engage participants in unpacking the behaviors and explore proactive strategies for redressing them. Participants will learn different strategies for dealing with incivility, information on how college student development may contribute to some of these behaviors, and learn what campus resources are available for faculty and students who seek additional support in confronting challenging behaviors. Presenters: Dr. Douglas Estry, Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education and Dean of Undergraduate Studies; Dr. Jan Collins-Eaglin, Director, Counseling Center; MSU Transforming Theatre Ensemble.
