Developing Prospective and Early Career Teachers' Equitable Mathematics Instructional Practices

The Teachers Empowered to Advance Change in Mathematics (TEACH Math) project is focused on helping prospective and early career teachers develop equitable teaching practices that connect to children’s multiple mathematical knowledge bases (MMKB), including children’s mathematical thinking and children’s home and community-based mathematical funds of knowledge. One strategy for doing this work is through identifying and building on curriculum spaces - existing and potential spaces in written curriculum materials that provide opportunities for connecting to children’s MMKB. In this talk, we will present our efforts to: 1) theorize the concept of curriculum spaces; 2) identify existing spaces in a range of written curriculum materials; and 3) develop and study tools and strategies for helping teachers open curriculum spaces.
