Working with First-Year STEM Students

Speakers: Pamela Bowen Smith, Professor of Speech-Language Pathology, Bloomsburg University

Discussion: First-year students have to navigate so many different things - academic and personal - when they start college. For some, being in a large lecture hall could be totally foreign, and for others, they may need help getting up to speed on basic undergraduate STEM topics. How can instructors adapt their courses to help first-year students succeed in the sciences? Hear from Dr. Pamela Bowen Smith as she discusses her experience at Pennsylvania's Bloomsburg University.

How do you attend a session? On the day of a session, we'll update the calendar below with a link to the session's Blackboard room. Simply find the session you wish to attend in the event calendar and click "Join this session"; it's a good idea to arrive 5-10 minutes before the event begins to ensure that your connection is fully functional. Please note that our events are discussion-based, so participants are strongly encouraged - but not required - to have microphones.

If you're new to Blackboard, make sure you review our Blackboard instruction page to familiarize yourself with the software ahead of time. If you plan on attending a CIRTL Reads session, don't forget to read the pre-selected article at the series' Moodle page ahead of time.
